Polish citizenship can be obtained in several ways:
• By birth – if one parent is a Polish citizen.
• By granting it by the President of the Republic of Poland – upon the request of a foreigner.
• By recognition as a Polish citizen – the decision is issued by the Voivode if you meet certain conditions, for example, you have the right of permanent residence in Poland.
• By repatriation – for people of Polish descent returning to the country.
If you are of Polish descent or have ancestors who held Polish citizenship, you can submit an application to the Voivode for confirmation of Polish citizenship. To do this, you will need documents confirming your ancestors' Polish citizenship.
Depending on the procedure, the following documents may be required:
• Passport and ID,
• Birth and marriage certificates,
• Documents confirming Polish ancestry or citizenship of ancestors,
• Certificates of residence and employment in Poland.
After confirming or obtaining citizenship, you must:
• Obtain a Polish birth certificate and PESEL number,
• Submit a passport application to the voivodeship office or consulate.
Passport application procedure:
• Submit the application in person – you must appear in person at the passport office or consulate, as fingerprinting is required.
• Complete the application form – the form is available both in paper and online format, depending on the location where the application is submitted.
• Passport fee – an administrative fee is charged for issuing a passport, the amount of which depends on the applicant's age and the type of passport (standard passport, temporary passport).
The waiting time for a passport is typically 2 to 4 weeks, depending on the workload of the offices. Temporary passports may require a shorter waiting time.
• Granting citizenship is a discretionary decision of the President of the Republic of Poland and does not require meeting specific legal requirements.
• Recognition as a Polish citizen is an administrative procedure conducted by the Voivode, based on meeting specific criteria, such as long-term residence in Poland.
The waiting time depends on the procedure:
• Recognition as a citizen – approximately 3-6 months.
• Confirmation of citizenship – 3-12 months, depending on the availability of documents.
• Granting citizenship by the President of the Republic of Poland – up to 2 years.
Yes, in most cases a certificate of Polish language proficiency at level B1 is required, unless you are of Polish descent or you obtain citizenship based on a grant from the President of the Republic of Poland.
Poland allows dual citizenship. However, some countries may require renunciation of citizenship in order to acquire Polish citizenship.
